Amy Yip Dares to be Fearless

The 2023 Student Television Network (STN) national convention held in Long Beach, California takes on the theme of courage with the slogan, “Dare to be Fearless.” Amy Yip of Holbrook High School, Massachusetts embodies these words. For that reason, EditMentor is proud to award her with a full scholarship to attend the convention.

An Eager Start in Journalism

Amy is a dedicated student committed to her dream of a career in broadcast journalism.

“After my exposure to journalism, I knew from the start that this was the place for me. It was a place where I could freely express my creativity and share my thoughts with not only my school, but the world.”

Amy Yip

Amy was proactive about her dream from the start. In junior high school she joined the school’s Journalism Club as a Staff Writer. Most students on average write a few or perhaps a dozen articles in their time with the club. However, Amy has authored more than sixty, some of which received national recognition.

Currently, Amy serves as Editor-in-Chief for her high school’s digital newspaper. In her role, she also regularly gives back to her peers. Specifically, she demonstrates writing and photography techniques and letting them shadow her on assignments. This goes hand in hand with her work as a member of the Video Production Club where her responsibilities include teaching younger members how to use a camera, enhancing their editing skills, and reviewing their work. In addition, Amy is a reporter for the school’s weekly video broadcast show, Code Blue News.

“Amy is one of the most dedicated self driven students I have ever had. I never have to remind her about any tasks she is responsible for, it is like working with a colleague not a student. Amy is already a pro!”

Zack Gorman, Executive Director of HCAM and HMHS Video Production Teacher

Amy’s Journey to Broadcast Video and STN

Looking ahead, Amy began to search for colleges with exceptional film programs, such as Emerson College in Boston. She aspires to attend film school and pursue a career in broadcast journalism. And in that spirit, Amy applied to STN’s Scholarship opportunity to attend this year’s STN national convention.

“If younger me were to see me now, she’d be pleasantly surprised that not only did I want to take the route less taken, but also receiving an enormous scholarship to encourage that dream.” Amy said.

EditMentor, as one of the convention sponsors, is proud to offer Amy a full scholarship to attend STN in California. The academic scholarship includes airfare, hotel, and registration for the convention. Amy received a surprise call from EditMentor founder Misha Tenenbaum via Zoom call on Friday, January 13, 2023 to announce the scholarship.

“Amy exemplifies a core principle of EditMentor, which is to make student journalists feel empowered by video storytelling. She inspires me.”

Misha Tenenbaum, CEO, EditMentor

With an estimated 230,000 people working in Broadcast Journalism in the United States, EditMentor realizes the need for a modern curriculum tailored to gen-z students. This is why they’ve developed a Broadcast Journalism course that introduces students to the principles of producing news content. Throughout the course, students learn how to identify newsworthy stories and understand how to capture viewers’ attention using professional interview techniques, engaging b-roll, purposeful stand-ups, and a concise reporter’s track to tie it all together in the edit.

Students like Amy are why EditMentor pursues a partnership with organizations like STN.
