She\u2019s a former student of Carlsbad High School teacher, Doug Green, who we had on the show in a recent episode.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a recent episode of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/editmentor.com\/blog\/welcome-to-the-tv-matters-podcast\/\">TV Matters<\/a><\/em>, hosted by Misha Tenenbaum, Faye joined Misha from her flat nearly 6,000 miles away in Wales where she shared her journey, from her early experiences in middle school broadcasting to her current studies at Cardiff University. Watching him bring home cameras and act in his projects, she became curious about and involved in the world of broadcasting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A bigger influence was her grandfather, a passionate photographer, who had shared his knowledge and equipment with Faye. He gave her his old cameras, allowing her to experiment with videography and editing from a young age. This hands-on experience gave her an early advantage when she eventually joined <em>VMS TV<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finding Her Own Path in Journalism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Despite her early exposure, Faye was hesitant to follow in her brother\u2019s footsteps. However, when a spot opened in the middle school program at <em>VMS TV<\/em>, she saw an opportunity to carve out her own identity as a journalist in the program rather than just being known as &#8220;her brother\u2019s younger sister.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Encouraged by her family, she took the leap\u2014and it was the start of a path that so far has taken her across the ocean for college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learning Journalism Fundamentals in Middle School: Media Literacy and Storytelling<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Under the guidance of her teacher, <a href=\"https:\/\/editmentor.com\/blog\/from-classroom-to-coastlines-doug-greens-impact-on-student-storytelling\/\">Doug Green<\/a>, Faye\u2019s middle school journalism experience involved more than just picking up a camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Media Literacy<\/strong>: Early classes focused on analyzing professional journalism, watching segments from <em>60 Minutes<\/em> and Steve Hartman, and discussing storytelling techniques.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Practical Skills<\/strong>: Over time, students learned camera settings, editing, and writing skills, preparing them for more advanced storytelling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>High Standards<\/strong>: Getting into <em>VMS TV<\/em> was competitive\u2014students had to apply in sixth grade to get into the high school program. They also participated in national competitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of Faye\u2019s first memorable projects was a lighthearted feature on a friend who enjoyed scootering. Although it seemed like a silly topic, it taught her valuable lessons in storytelling\u2014how to craft a compelling narrative even when there doesn\u2019t seem to be a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Competitive Side: Journalism at CHSTV<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Transitioning to high school, Faye joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chstv.com\/\"><em>CHSTV<\/em><\/a> (Carlsbad High School Television), a nationally recognized broadcast program. Getting in was no small feat\u2014the application process included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>A Feature Story<\/strong> \u2013 Showcasing a well-produced news segment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>A &#8220;Chapman Application&#8221;<\/strong> \u2013 A story about herself without her physical presence in the video.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>A Sizzle Reel<\/strong> \u2013 A collection of clips demonstrating her on-air personality and editing skills.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Faye credits <em>CHSTV<\/em> not just for developing her technical skills but also for shaping her as a person. The program pushed her to meet deadlines, improve public speaking, and become more comfortable interviewing people\u2014an essential skill in journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges and Triumphs: The STN Competition<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">One of the biggest moments in Faye\u2019s early journalism career came with the <a href=\"http:\/\/studenttelevision.com\"><em>Student Television Network<\/em><\/a><em> (STN)<\/em> competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Although her middle school team was set to compete in Washington, D.C., the event was canceled due to COVID-19. However, they participated in the remote <em>Fall Challenge<\/em>, where teams had just four days to produce a feature story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Her team chose to highlight a cheerleader with Down syndrome, ensuring the story was framed as one of empowerment rather than sympathy. She\u2019s even assisting her former teacher, Doug Green, with a new initiative\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/youth-work-excellence-awards\"><em>Cardiff Youth Service Young Creators Program<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Despite working alongside him as a colleague, Faye still calls him \u201cMr. Green,\u201d a habit she finds hard to break after knowing him as a teacher since she was nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Her story is a testament to how early experiences, mentorship, and perseverance can shape a successful career in journalism.
